Who is britwandering?
Early Life
I was born in Boston, UK (yes the original) at the end of the 90’s. The flat landscapes and easy walking I think set me up very early in life for my love with out outdoors and nature. I however did not live here long moving after a few years to Farringdon to follow my fathers job as it moved across the country. This area is right on the edge of the Cotswolds meaning we spent many days and evenings as a family out in the outdoors on walks and looking at nature an wildlife. I vividly remember the Blue bell forests out the back of our Little Hamlet.
After a couple years here we moved again to Northamptonshire. This was to a town just outside Banbury. I Don’t remember spending all that much time in the outdoors being now close to a big town and living in a small town ourselves. however this is not to say it had an impact. There was a village close to where we lived where every house had thatched roofs and i would watch the houses be rethatched form time to time when the houses required it. Again after a few years again we moved to our final resting place, the South Wales Valleys.
Moving and living in Wales
We moved to Wales just as I was entering year 5 in primary school. The town we moved to was at the time small and sleepy. Having small Tesco and Somerfield supermarkets the rest of the town was independent Grocers, Pubs and amenities. The house we was living in was in the shadow of a mountain that was very steep and green almost all year round. Pine trees that where once used for pit probs in the towns mining days dominated the top of the mountain (we did upset the locals at the time for calling it a Big Hill). This I think is where I really found my love affair for the outdoors.
I joined the local scout group fairly quickly as this seemed like a natural fit. all my mates in school where joining the cadets which would have been fine for me to however I liked the group I had joined so much at the time I decided to stay. I learned some basic bushcraft skills here like knots, lashings and firefighting which I still use regularly to this day. My time in scouts ended when I was 14 after attending the 100 year Serbian scouting jamboree. this is a decision I have grown to regret as I have ages and entered adulthood
Going Alone
My first job was at a place called the camping and kite centre. I had applied for this job just after my 18th birthday and at the time could not drive so had no way to get there. My parents put me through my driving lessons and tests and luckily I passed less than a month before I started working there. As a shy awkward 18 year old that had not quite got out of the teenage mindset yet this was a difficult job however I strongly believe that the first 3 months in this job gave me the life skills I needed move into adulthood. The job was a perfect fit for me, I was forced into sales work but I could do it is the shadow of the skirrid mountain. I learned about the manufacturing and sales of tents and other outdoor equipment and gained the knowledge to be able to go out into the wilderness on my own. Its in this time I started to Wildcamp solo. I had wildcamped a few times in the past with mates however I knew that in order to get out more I would have to do it on my own more often than not. I was finally bringing together the knowledge I had gained in the scouts and the new knowledge I was gaining in my job. Some of the images on this website where taken in this time and remain some of my favourite photos.
Now and the Future
Unfortunately this time had to come to an end. I needed to get a Job that would pay bills. I moved eventually to a 9-5 office job and moved to the City of Cardiff. I realised then that I had to be to close to nature. I only lasted 2 years in Cardiff before moving back to the Welsh valleys to the little village I currently live it.
This website is the start of me sharing my experiences and knowledge with the world through the photographs I have taken over the years. Predominantly I take landscape photos however I do also like to take photos of animals and also my camps and outdoor equipment.
I will be sharing my Portfolios of photos with specific themes on this site along with blogs to accompany these. You will also find links to my Instagram, X, and BlueSky where I am sharing individual photos.
